Kate Banks is an American author known for her contributions to children’s literature. She has written numerous picture books and novels for young readers, often collaborating with illustrators from around the world. Banks grew up in Maine and later studied at Wellesley College and Columbia University.
Her works frequently explore themes of family, nature, and imagination. Notable picture books by Banks include The Night Worker, illustrated by Georg Hallensleben, and And If the Moon Could Talk, also illustrated by Hallensleben. And If the Moon Could Talk received the Boston Globe–Horn Book Award for Picture Book in 1998. Other titles by Banks include Max’s Words, illustrated by Boris Kulikov, and Baboon, illustrated by Georg Hallensleben.
Banks has also written early readers and chapter books, such as Dillon Dillon and Walk Softly, Rachel. Her books have been published by several major publishers, including Farrar, Straus and Giroux and Frances Foster Books.
In 1998, Kate Banks won the Boston Globe–Horn Book Award for Picture Book for And If the Moon Could Talk.
