Julie Murphy biography

Julie Murphy is an American author known for her contemporary young adult fiction. She is the author of several novels, including Dumplin’, which was published by Balzer + Bray in 2015. Murphy’s work often explores themes of self-acceptance, identity, and body positivity, and her books are widely read in schools and libraries.

Murphy’s debut novel, Side Effects May Vary, was published in 2014 by Balzer + Bray. She followed this with Dumplin’, which received critical attention and was included on several recommended reading lists. The novel centres on a Texas teenager who enters a beauty pageant, challenging traditional standards and expectations.

Murphy has also written Puddin’ (2018), a companion novel to Dumplin’, as well as Ramona Blue (2017), which explores issues of sexuality and family. Her other works include Faith: Taking Flight (2020), a young adult novel inspired by the Valiant Comics character Faith Herbert, and If the Shoe Fits (2021), a contemporary reimagining of the Cinderella story for Disney Hyperion.

In addition to her novels, Murphy has contributed to anthologies and has been involved in various literary events and festivals. Her books have been recognised by organisations such as the American Library Association, with Dumplin’ named to the 2016 Best Fiction for Young Adults list.
