Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Julia Kuo is a Taiwanese-American illustrator and author-illustrator of children’s books. She has worked with The New York Times, Google and Science Friday, and she has taught illustration courses at Columbia College Chicago and Washington University in St. Louis.
Kuo illustrated I Dream of Popo, a picture book written by Livia Blackburne about a young girl who emigrates from Taiwan to America and keeps a bond with her grandmother across oceans and time zones. Her illustration work also includes The Sound of Silence by Katrina Goldsaito, Go, Little Green Truck! by Roni Schotter, Daisy and Josephine by Melissa Gilbert, Everyone Eats, 20 Ways to Draw a Dress and 20 Ways to Draw a Cat.
Let’s Do Everything and Nothing, written and illustrated by Kuo, is a 32-page children’s picture book for ages 3–6, published by Roaring Brook Press on 22 March 2022. The book centres on shared moments between an adult and child, including climbing a hill, diving into a lake and spending time together.
Luminous: Living Things That Light Up the Night is a 44-page picture book by Kuo about bioluminescence, including fireflies, foxfire, glow-worms, fungi, deep-sea fish and vampire squids. The book combines lyrical text with scientific information about living things that make their own light.
Home Is a Wish, written and illustrated by Kuo, is a 32-page children’s picture book for ages 3–6, published by Roaring Brook Press on 4 February 2025. The book follows the experience of leaving home, adjusting to a new place and understanding home as something that can change over time.
