John Steinbeck was an American author known for his novels, short stories, and non-fiction works. He published his first novel, Cup of Gold, in 1929. Steinbeck gained wider recognition with Tortilla Flat (1935), which won the California Commonwealth Club’s Gold Medal for best novel by a Californian author.
His 1937 novella, Of Mice and Men, and the 1939 novel, The Grapes of Wrath, are among his most widely read works. The Grapes of Wrath won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1940. Steinbeck also wrote East of Eden (1952), The Pearl (1947), and Cannery Row (1945).
In addition to fiction, Steinbeck produced non-fiction, including Travels with Charley: In Search of America (1962). He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962 for his realistic and imaginative writings, combining sympathetic humour and keen social perception.
Steinbeck’s works have been translated into many languages and adapted for stage and screen. He died in 1968. His final book, America and Americans, was published in 1966.
