Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
John Hegley is a British poet, comedian, and performer known for his work in children’s literature and live poetry. He began his career performing poetry and comedy in the late 1970s and gained wider recognition through appearances on radio and television, including the BBC’s Word of Mouth and Saturday Live.
Hegley has published several books for children, often combining poetry with illustrations. His works include Stanley’s Stick, written by Hegley and illustrated by Neal Layton, which was published by Hodder Children’s Books in 2011. The book explores the imaginative possibilities of a simple stick, encouraging creativity and playfulness in young readers.
In addition to his children’s books, Hegley has produced collections of poetry for adults and has performed at numerous festivals and schools across the UK. His performances are characterised by humour, wordplay, and audience participation, making poetry accessible to a wide range of audiences.
John Hegley’s Stanley’s Stick was published by Hodder Children’s Books in 2011.
