Jane Austen biography

Jane Austen was an English novelist known for her works of romantic fiction set among the British landed gentry. Her major novels include Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), and Emma (1815). Two additional novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, were published posthumously in 1817. Austen’s novels are noted for their realism, biting social commentary, and masterful use of irony.

Her works have been published continuously since their first appearance and have been translated into multiple languages. Pride and Prejudice remains one of the most widely read novels in English literature. Austen’s novels have inspired numerous adaptations for stage, film, and television. In 1816, she became ill, but continued to work on her writing until shortly before her death. Her literary reputation grew steadily after her death, and by the twentieth century, she was widely recognised as one of the leading novelists in English literature. In 2017, the Bank of England issued a new £10 note featuring Jane Austen’s portrait.
