Jack Kerouac was an American novelist and poet, widely recognised as a leading figure of the Beat Generation. He was born in Lowell, Massachusetts. Kerouac attended Columbia University, where he met fellow writers Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs. These relationships played a significant role in the development of the Beat literary movement.
Kerouac’s writing is known for its spontaneous prose style and exploration of themes such as travel, spirituality, and the search for meaning. His most famous work, On the Road, was published by Viking Press in 1957. The novel is based on his travels across the United States and is considered a defining work of postwar American literature.
In addition to On the Road, Kerouac published several other novels, including The Dharma Bums (1958), Desolation Angels (1965), and Big Sur (1962). He also wrote poetry, with collections such as Mexico City Blues (1959). His works often reflect his interest in Buddhism and jazz music.
Kerouac’s influence extends beyond literature, impacting music, film, and popular culture. His writing style and themes have inspired generations of writers and artists. On the Road remains his most enduring legacy, first published in 1957.
