Iain Banks biography

Iain Banks was a Scottish author known for his work in both mainstream and science fiction literature. He published his first novel, The Wasp Factory, in 1984 with Macmillan, which brought him immediate recognition. Banks wrote mainstream fiction under the name Iain Banks and science fiction as Iain M. Banks. His science fiction works include the acclaimed Culture series, beginning with Consider Phlebas in 1987, published by Macmillan.

Banks’s bibliography includes novels such as Walking on Glass (1985), The Bridge (1986), Espedair Street (1987), Canal Dreams (1989), and Complicity (1993). His science fiction titles as Iain M. Banks include The Player of Games (1988), Use of Weapons (1990), Excession (1996), and Surface Detail (2010).

Banks received several literary honours. In 2004, he was named one of the “Best of Young British Novelists” by Granta magazine. His novel The Wasp Factory was listed in The Independent’s 2014 selection of the 100 best novels. The Crow Road (1992) was adapted for television by the BBC in 1996.

His final novel, The Quarry, was published by Little, Brown in 2013.
