Holly Black biography

Holly Black is an American author known for her work in children’s and young adult fantasy literature. She co-created the bestselling series The Spiderwick Chronicles with illustrator Tony DiTerlizzi, first published by Simon & Schuster in 2003. The series comprises five main books and has been translated into over 30 languages. The Spiderwick Chronicles was adapted into a feature film released in 2008.

Black’s debut novel, Tithe: A Modern Faerie Tale, was published in 2002 by Simon & Schuster. She continued the series with Valiant (2005) and Ironside (2007). Her standalone novel Doll Bones (2013) received a Newbery Honor in 2014 and was also awarded the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Children’s Literature.

She is the author of The Folk of the Air trilogy, beginning with The Cruel Prince (2018), followed by The Wicked King (2019) and The Queen of Nothing (2019), all published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. The Cruel Prince was a New York Times bestseller and won the 2019 Lodestar Award for Best Young Adult Book.

Black has also written The Coldest Girl in Coldtown (2013) and co-authored the Magisterium series with Cassandra Clare, starting with The Iron Trial (2014). Her works have received multiple accolades, including the Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy for White Cat (2010).

In 2022, Black published Book of Night, her first adult fantasy novel, with Tor Books. Her books have appeared on bestseller lists and have been recognised by the American Library Association and other literary organisations.
