Hans Christian Andersen biography
Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish author best known for his fairy tales. He was born in Odense, Denmark. Andersen published his first book, a travelogue titled Fodreise fra Holmens Canal til Østpynten af Amager, in 1829. His first collection of fairy tales, Eventyr, fortalte for Børn (Fairy Tales, Told for Children), appeared in 1835 and included stories such as “The Tinderbox,” “Little Claus and Big Claus,” and “The Princess and the Pea.”
Andersen’s fairy tales have been translated into numerous languages and include well-known titles such as “The Little Mermaid,” “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” “The Ugly Duckling,” “Thumbelina,” and “The Snow Queen.” His works have been published in several volumes, with new stories appearing in collections throughout his life. Andersen also wrote novels, plays, poems, and travel books.
His fairy tales have received international recognition and have influenced literature, theatre, and film. In 1867, Andersen was made an honorary citizen of Odense. The Hans Christian Andersen Award, established in 1956 by the International Board on Books for Young People, is named in his honour and is awarded biennially to authors and illustrators for lasting contributions to children’s literature.
Andersen’s final fairy tale collection was published in 1872. He died in 1875.
