Gyles Brandreth is a British writer and broadcaster whose published work includes children’s books, fiction, diaries and anthologies.
He served as the Conservative Member of Parliament for City of Chester from 1992 to 1997. In Parliament, he introduced the Private Member’s Bill that became the Marriage Act 1994, which enabled civil marriages to take place in approved premises. In 1995, he was appointed a Lord Commissioner of the Treasury, working as a government Whip.
Brandreth has written children’s humour and puzzle books, including What Goes Up White and Comes Down Yellow?, a collection of riddles published for readers aged 7–12. He is also the author of the detective novel Oscar Wilde and the Candlelight Murders, the first in a series featuring Oscar Wilde as an amateur sleuth.
What Goes Up White and Comes Down Yellow? was published by Puffin on 9 February 2023.
