Gregory Mackay biography

Gregory Mackay is a comics creator and illustrator whose work for children includes the Anders graphic-novel series. He has been making comics since he was at school, and his creative interests include drawing, watercolour painting, drawing aeroplanes and machines, building models and painting pictures.

Anders and the Comet is book one in the Anders series, written and illustrated by Mackay, with a 160-page second edition published by Allen & Unwin on 5 May 2026 for readers aged 6 to 11. The story follows Anders, Eden and Bernie during the school holidays, with comics, games, ice cream, a water park, the Green Grabber, Skip and a rescue in the sky.

Mackay’s Anders books include Anders and the Comet, Anders and the Volcano and The Adventures of Anders. Anders and the Volcano is a black-and-white graphic novel about Anders, Eden and Bernie at Camp Canvas near Mt. Tremble, an extinct volcano, and was reviewed as a children’s book for ages 6 to 11 in September 2017.

Mackay also created the Francis Bear books, including Francis Bear and The Trials of Francis Bear. The Trials of Francis Bear is the second book-length Francis Bear work, a 180-page paperback published on 1 January 2012.

Anders and the Comet and Anders and the Volcano were Mackay’s first books for children, were also published in France, and were shortlisted for the Angoulême Festival. In 2018, Mackay undertook a six-month Australia Council for the Arts residency at the Keesing Studio at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.
