Graham Oakley was a British author and illustrator, best known for his work in children’s literature. He began his career as a set designer for theatre and television, including work for the BBC. Oakley is particularly recognised for creating the Church Mice series, which features the adventures of a group of mice and a cat named Sam living in a church. The first book in the series, The Church Mouse, was published in 1972.
Oakley both wrote and illustrated his books, noted for their detailed and humorous artwork. The Church Mice series includes titles such as The Church Cat Abroad, The Church Mice at Bay, and The Church Mice and the Ring. In addition to this series, Oakley also wrote and illustrated other picture books, including Graham Oakley’s Magical Changes and Henry’s Quest.
His work received recognition within the field of children’s literature. The Church Mice Adrift was highly commended for the Kate Greenaway Medal in 1976, an award presented for distinguished illustration in a book for children.
