George R.R. Martin is an American novelist, short story writer and television producer. He studied journalism at Northwestern University in Illinois.
Martin is best known for his epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, beginning with A Game of Thrones (1996). The series includes further volumes such as A Clash of Kings (1998), A Storm of Swords (2000), A Feast for Crows (2005) and A Dance with Dragons (2011). The books were adapted into the HBO television series Game of Thrones (2011–2019), which brought his work to a global audience.
Before this, Martin wrote science fiction and horror, including the novel Fevre Dream (1982) and numerous short stories. He has won multiple Hugo, Nebula and World Fantasy Awards. A Game of Thrones was first published in 1996.
