Summer 2019 – best new children’s and YA books – our picks
Here’s our selection of top new titles coming out in summer 2019. These reading recommendations include picture books, early and middle-grade fiction; young adult novels and non-fiction.
Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Gayle E. Pitman, Ph.D., is a professor of psychology at Sacramento City College. Her writing, research and teaching focus on gender and sexual orientation. Her books are published under the name Gayle E. Pitman and include children’s picture books, nonfiction for young people and work connected with LGBTQ+ history and identity.
This Day in June, illustrated by Kristyna Litten, was published on 1 October 2013. The book introduces a Pride celebration for young readers and includes a note for parents and caregivers, plus a reading guide with information about LGBTQ+ history and culture. This Day in June won the Stonewall Book Award—Mike Morgan and Larry Romans Children’s & Young Adult Literature Award, and it was also recognised by the Notable Books for a Global Society Awards.
Feminism from A to Z was published on 23 October 2017 as an alphabetical primer on feminism for teen readers. Each chapter examines a topic and includes call-to-action exercises, with material covering history and current events through feminist theory.
The Stonewall Riots: Coming Out in the Streets is a nonfiction book by Gayle E. Pitman about the history of the Stonewall riots and the wider movement around them. My Maddy, illustrated by Violet Tobacco and published by Magination in May 2020, centres on a child with a nonbinary parent and is written for readers aged 4–8.
Evelyn Hooker and the Fairy Project, illustrated by Sarah Green, is a biography of psychologist Evelyn Hooker and explains her research, advocacy and allyship in relation to the removal of “Homosexuality” as a diagnosis from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders; it was published on 26 October 2021.
