Fergus Fleming biography

Fergus Fleming writes non-fiction about exploration, travel and history. His book Barrow’s Boys: A Stirring Story of Daring, Fortitude, and Outright Lunacy follows John Barrow, Second Secretary to the Admiralty, and the British exploration programme that sent naval officers to the Arctic, Africa and Antarctica after the Napoleonic Wars.

His exploration histories include Ninety Degrees North: The Quest for the North Pole, which covers nineteenth-century attempts to reach the North Pole after Sir John Franklin’s disappearance in 1845. His book The Sword and the Cross is set in the Sahara at the end of the nineteenth century and follows Charles de Foucauld and Henri Laperrine during France’s expansion from Algeria into the desert.

Fleming also wrote Killing Dragons, a history of early British mountaineering in the Alps, and Cassell’s Tales of Endurance, a collection of survival and exploration narratives. Off the Map: Tales of Endurance and Exploration brings together stories from different ages of exploration, including episodes connected with John Franklin and René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle.

In 2016 Bloomsbury Publishing published The Man with the Golden Typewriter: Ian Fleming’s James Bond Letters in paperback, with Fergus Fleming as anthology editor. The volume gathers letters by Ian Fleming connected with the writing and publication of the James Bond novels, and the paperback edition was published on 2 June 2016.
