Children’s book news for July 2026: Beth O’Brien wins the Carnegie and UKLA awards, Patrice Lawrence becomes Children’s Laureate, John Agard takes a third CLiPPA, and Little Smith launches.
Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Edward Ross is a comic-book artist, writer and illustrator. His work includes comics and graphic non-fiction, and he has created science-themed comics with Dr James Hall for universities, museums, charities and research bodies. He is a film studies graduate and leads workshops in comic-book creation.
Ross wrote Filmish: A Graphic Journey Through Film, a graphic non-fiction book about cinema history and film ideas. The book was published by SelfMadeHero on 3 November 2015, with ISBN 9781910593035 and 192 pages.
Ross wrote Gamish: A Graphic History of Gaming, a graphic history of video games that covers early prototypes from the late 1940s, the growth of the medium in the 1970s, and modern gaming culture. Penguin published Gamish on 5 November 2020, with ISBN 9780241392195 and 208 pages.
Ross wrote and illustrated Graphic Novel Builder: The Illustrated Guide to Making Your Own Comics, with an introduction by Alice Oseman. The book guides young creators through types of comics, story plotting, scripting, character creation, world-building, drawing skills and sharing a graphic novel.
