E.H Shepard biography

Ernest H. Shepard was born in England in 1879 and died in 1976. He won a scholarship to the Royal Academy Schools and, after graduating, earned his living by drawing for illustrated papers and books. He later became a regular contributor to Punch magazine, where he met A. A. Milne.

Shepard illustrated A. A. Milne’s first book of verse, When We Were Very Young. His drawings became part of Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh stories, including the characters Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore and Christopher Robin in the Hundred Acre Wood.

In 1926, Winnie-the-Pooh, a collection of stories by A. A. Milne with illustrations by Ernest H. Shepard, was published in England and America. Books illustrated by Shepard include Winnie-the-Pooh, The House at Pooh Corner, When We Were Very Young and Now We Are Six.
