Theodor Seuss Geisel, known professionally as Dr Seuss, was an American author and illustrator, primarily recognised for his children’s books. His career began in advertising and cartooning before he published his first book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, in 1937. This work marked the start of a prolific output of illustrated stories aimed at young readers.
Dr Seuss’s writing is characterised by imaginative characters, inventive rhymes, and a playful use of language. He authored over 60 books, many of which became classics of children’s literature, including The Cat in the Hat (1957), Green Eggs and Ham (1960), and How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1957). These books often feature a mix of fantasy and moral lessons.
During World War II, Geisel worked in animation and film production for the U.S. Army, producing propaganda and instructional shorts. After the war, he returned to writing and illustrating children’s books, focusing on promoting literacy through engaging and accessible text.
Dr Seuss’s books have been translated into numerous languages and have sold hundreds of millions of copies worldwide. His influence extends into stage and screen adaptations, including animated and live-action films based on his works.
Throughout his career, Dr Seuss received several awards. Notably, he was awarded a Pulitzer Prize Special Citation in 1984 for his contribution to children’s literature.
