Donna Barba Higuera is an American author known for her work in children’s and young adult literature. Her writing often explores themes of identity, family, and cultural heritage. Higuera’s debut middle grade novel, Lupe Wong Won’t Dance, was published by Levine Querido in 2020. The book follows a young girl who is determined to change her school’s policy on square dancing, blending humour with issues of cultural representation.

Higuera’s second novel, The Last Cuentista, was published by Levine Querido in 2021. This science fiction story centres on a young girl who must preserve the stories of her people after Earth is destroyed. The Last Cuentista received the John Newbery Medal and the Pura Belpré Children’s Author Award in 2022.
