DK biography

DK, also known as Dorling Kindersley, is a British multinational publishing company specialising in illustrated reference books for children and adults. Founded in 1974 by Christopher Dorling and Peter Kindersley, DK is recognised for its distinctive visual style, combining photography and text to present information in accessible formats. The company publishes titles across a range of subjects, including science, history, nature, and technology, with a significant focus on educational content for children and young adults.

DK’s children’s and young adult catalogue includes series such as Eyewitness, First Facts, My First, and Find Out. The Eyewitness series, launched in 1988, has sold millions of copies worldwide and has been translated into more than 36 languages. DK has also published official books in partnership with brands such as LEGO, Star Wars, Marvel, and Disney, producing encyclopaedias, visual guides, and activity books for younger readers.

DK’s publications have received numerous awards, including the Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize and the Blue Peter Book Award. The company’s books are distributed globally and are used widely in schools and libraries. In 2000, DK became part of Penguin Random House, a division of Bertelsmann.

In 2018, DK celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Eyewitness series, marking over three decades of illustrated non-fiction publishing for children and young adults.
