Devin Fan biography

Devin Fan is a Canadian children’s author, illustrator, artist, poet and youth worker. He is the younger brother of children’s book authors and illustrators Eric and Terry Fan, who work together as the Fan Brothers. Devin is represented by literary agent Allison Remcheck at Stimola Literary Studio.

His debut picture book, The Barnabus Project, was created in collaboration with his brothers and published by Tundra Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House Canada, in 2020. The UK edition was published by Frances Lincoln Children’s Books. The story follows Barnabus, a genetically engineered creature who is part mouse and part elephant. Living in a secret laboratory beneath a pet shop, Barnabus and his fellow rejected creations attempt to escape when they discover that they are scheduled to be recycled.

The Barnabus Project won the 2020 Governor General’s Literary Award for Young People’s Literature in the Illustrated Books category and the 2021 TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award. It was also named the best Canadian picture book of 2020 by CBC Books and nominated for the 2022 Kate Greenaway Medal.

Devin reunited with Eric and Terry Fan for Barnaby Unboxed!, published by Tundra Books in September 2024. The picture book follows Barnaby, a creature who is part mouse, part elephant and part flamingo, as he searches for a place where he belongs after his owner acquires a newer pet. The UK edition, titled Barnaby Unboxed, was published by Frances Lincoln Children’s Books on 5 September 2024.
