David Almond is an English author known for his contributions to children’s and young adult literature. He published his debut novel, Skellig, in 1998 with Hodder Children’s Books. Skellig won the Carnegie Medal and the Whitbread Children’s Book Award, and has been adapted for stage, radio, and television. Almond’s subsequent works include Kit’s Wilderness (1999), which received a Michael L. Printz Honor, and Heaven Eyes (2000). His other notable books include The Fire-Eaters (2003), which won the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize Gold Award, and Clay (2005), which was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal.
Almond has written picture books such as Mina (2011), a prequel to Skellig, and The Boy Who Swam with Piranhas (2012). His work has been translated into over forty languages. In 2010, Almond received the Hans Christian Andersen Award for his lasting contribution to children’s literature. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2012. In 2022, he published Brand New Boy with Walker Books.
