She is a professor of psychology at Rutgers University. Markey has authored several books aimed at young people and their parents, focusing on body image and healthy relationships with food.

Her notable works include The Body Image Book for Girls: Love Yourself and Grow Up Fearless, published by Cambridge University Press in 2020, which addresses body image issues for adolescent girls. In 2022, she published The Body Image Book for Boys: Love Your Body, Feed Your Soul, also with Cambridge University Press, providing guidance for boys on similar topics. Markey has also written Smart People Don’t Diet: How the Latest Science Can Help You Lose Weight Permanently, published by Da Capo Lifelong Books in 2014.
