Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Dr Charlotte Birkmanis is a marine biologist who researches sharks and works as a wildlife science communicator. She completed her doctorate in 2022, studying where sharks are and why they are there through time and space. Her work for readers connects marine biology with accessible information about predators, sharks and ocean life.
Birkmanis writes for children, science and nonfiction readers. The book was published in hardcover on 9 October 2022.
Her science communication work includes in-person and online presentations in English and Mandarin Chinese. She has written more than 30 publications across science and popular literature, including articles, interviews and books. Her work has also included school and community Q&A sessions, keynote speeches, expert panels, hosting and facilitation.
Birkmanis wrote The Shark Deck: A Deep Dive on 50 Fascinating Sharks, with illustrations by Gustav Dejert. The set presents facts and figures on 50 shark species, including habitat, diet, conservation status and maximum size. The Shark Deck: A Deep Dive on 50 Fascinating Sharks was published by Rizzoli on 4 June 2024.
