Charles John Huffam Dickens (7 February 1812 – 9 June 1870) was an English novelist, journalist, and social critic, widely regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. Born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, Dickens was the second of eight children in a family that faced financial instability. At age 12, his father was imprisoned for debt, and Dickens was sent to work in a blacking factory, an experience that profoundly influenced his later works.
After a brief return to school, Dickens worked as a clerk and taught himself shorthand, which led to a career as a parliamentary reporter. His literary debut came with the publication of *Sketches by “Boz”* in 1836, followed by the serialized novel *The Pickwick Papers*, which brought him widespread fame. Dickens went on to write 15 novels, including *Oliver Twist* (1838), *David Copperfield* (1850), *Bleak House* (1853), *A Tale of Two Cities* (1859), and *Great Expectations* (1861), many of which were serialized in magazines before being published in book form.
Known for his vivid characters and depictions of Victorian society, Dickens used his writing to address social issues such as poverty, child labour, and class inequality. His works often featured memorable characters like Ebenezer Scrooge, Oliver Twist, and David Copperfield, and were characterized by a blend of humour, pathos, and social criticism.
In addition to his novels, Dickens was a prolific letter writer, with over 14,000 known letters, and he edited and contributed to several periodicals. He also gave public readings of his works, which were immensely popular and showcased his theatrical flair. Dickens’s personal life was marked by a troubled marriage to Catherine Hogarth, with whom he had ten children. In 1858, they separated, and Dickens formed a relationship with actress Ellen Ternan.
Charles Dickens died of a stroke on 9 June 1870 at his home in Gad’s Hill, Kent. He was buried in Westminster Abbey, London. His legacy endures through his extensive body of work, which continues to be celebrated for its rich storytelling and keen social insight.
