Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Caryl Hart is a British children’s author known for her picture books and early readers. She has published numerous titles with major UK publishers, including Nosy Crow, Simon & Schuster, and Bloomsbury. Hart’s debut picture book, Don’t Dip Your Chips in Your Drink, Kate!, was published by Simon & Schuster in 2009. She is the author of the Albie series, illustrated by Ed Eaves, which includes titles such as How to Grow a Dinosaur and How to Save a Superhero. Hart has also collaborated with illustrator Sarah Warburton on the Princess series, including Princess and the Peas and Prince George and the Royal Potty.
Her book Meet the Planets, illustrated by Bethan Woollvin, was shortlisted for the 2021 Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize. When a Dragon Comes to Stay, illustrated by Rosalind Beardshaw, was shortlisted for the Sheffield Children’s Book Award in 2019. Hart’s works have been translated into multiple languages and are widely available in libraries and schools across the UK. She has also written for the Whiffy Wilson series, illustrated by Leonie Lord, and the Supermarket Zoo series, illustrated by Ed Eaves.
Caryl Hart’s picture book Girls Can Do Anything, illustrated by Ali Pye, was published by Scholastic in 2019. Her book Thank You for the Little Things, illustrated by Emily Hamilton, was published by Bloomsbury in 2022. Hart’s books have received recognition from the Stockport Children’s Book Award and the Nottingham Children’s Book Award. In 2021, Meet the Oceans, illustrated by Bethan Woollvin, was published by Bloomsbury.
