Cao Wenxuan is a Chinese author of children’s literature. He is a professor of Chinese literature at Peking University. Cao’s works are known for their focus on rural life and the experiences of children in China. His notable books include Bronze and Sunflower, Dingding and Dangdang, and The Grass House. Bronze and Sunflower was first published in China in 2005 and later translated into English by Helen Wang, published by Walker Books in 2015.
Cao’s writing has received significant recognition. In 2016, he was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Award for Writing by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY), becoming the first Chinese author to receive this honour. His books have been translated into multiple languages and published internationally.
Cao Wenxuan’s The Grass House was published in 1997 and has become a classic of Chinese children’s literature. His stories often depict the resilience and emotional lives of children facing adversity. Cao has also written academic works on literature and served as an editor for literary journals.
In 2017, Cao’s novel Dragonfly Eyes was published in English by Walker Books. His works have received several national and international awards, including the Song Qingling Literature Prize and the National Outstanding Children’s Literature Award in China. Cao Wenxuan was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2016.
