Candace Savage is a Canadian author known for her works in children’s and young adult non-fiction, as well as adult non-fiction. She has written extensively on natural history, science, and the environment. Savage’s books for young readers include Wild Mammals (1981), Wolves (1988), and Bird Brains: The Intelligence of Crows, Ravens, Magpies, and Jays (1995). Her writing often explores animal behaviour and ecological themes.
Savage’s work has received recognition in Canada and internationally. She won the Science in Society Book Award from the Canadian Science Writers’ Association for Wizards (1985). Her book Geese: A Wildlife Watcher’s Guide (1996) was shortlisted for the Silver Birch Award. In 2010, she received the Saskatchewan Order of Merit for her contributions to literature and natural history education.
In addition to her children’s titles, Savage has published several acclaimed books for adults, including A Geography of Blood: Unearthing Memory from a Prairie Landscape (2012), which won the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction. Her books have been published by Greystone Books, Firefly Books, and other major Canadian publishers.
Her most recent works include Strangers in the House: A Prairie Story of Bigotry and Belonging (2019) and Hello, Crow! (2020), a picture book illustrated by Chelsea O’Byrne. Savage’s writing has been translated into several languages and is used in educational settings across Canada.
In 2022, Candace Savage was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada.
