Bruce Pascoe is an Australian writer of Bunurong, Yuin, and Tasmanian heritage. He is known for his work across fiction, non-fiction, and children’s literature. Pascoe has published numerous books, including the acclaimed non-fiction title Dark Emu (2014), which examines Aboriginal agricultural practices and challenges conventional narratives about pre-colonial Australia. The book won the 2016 NSW Premier’s Literary Award for Book of the Year and the Indigenous Writers’ Prize.
Pascoe’s children’s and young adult works include Fog a Dox (2012), which won the Prime Minister’s Literary Award for Young Adult Fiction in 2013. He has also written Mrs Whitlam (2016), a novel for younger readers, and Young Dark Emu: A Truer History (2019), an adaptation of Dark Emu for younger audiences. Young Dark Emu received the 2020 Children’s Book Council of Australia Eve Pownall Award for Information Books.
Pascoe’s writing has appeared in anthologies and literary journals, and he has contributed to the promotion of Indigenous Australian history and culture through his published works. In 2018, he was awarded the Australia Council Award for Lifetime Achievement in Literature.
His most recent children’s book, Found (2020), illustrated by Charmaine Ledden-Lewis, was shortlisted for the 2021 Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year: Early Childhood.
