Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock is an American author known for her work in young adult fiction. Her debut novel, The Smell of Other People’s Houses, was published by Wendy Lamb Books in 2016. The novel is set in Alaska and draws on Hitchcock’s own experiences growing up in the state. It received critical acclaim and was shortlisted for the 2016 Carnegie Medal. The book was also nominated for the 2017 CILIP Carnegie Medal and was a finalist for the William C. Morris Award for a debut YA author. In addition, it was longlisted for the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize in 2016.
Hitchcock’s second novel, Everyone Dies Famous in a Small Town, was published by Faber & Faber in 2021. This work was longlisted for the 2022 Carnegie Medal. Before becoming a novelist, Hitchcock worked as a public radio reporter in Alaska. Her writing often reflects her background and the landscapes of Alaska. The Smell of Other People’s Houses has been translated into several languages and has been recognised for its contribution to young adult literature. In 2021, Everyone Dies Famous in a Small Town was also shortlisted for the UKLA Book Award.
Hitchcock continues to be recognised for her literary achievements, with her novels receiving multiple nominations and awards in the field of children’s and young adult literature.
