Beth Waters is a British author and illustrator known for her work in children’s picture books. She studied at the Cambridge School of Art, where she completed an MA in Children’s Book Illustration. Waters’ debut picture book, Child of St Kilda, was published by Child’s Play in 2019. The book tells the story of Norman John Gillies, the last child born on the remote Scottish island of St Kilda, and is based on historical events.
Child of St Kilda was shortlisted for the 2020 Kate Greenaway Medal and was also longlisted for the Klaus Flugge Prize. Waters’ illustration style often incorporates monoprint techniques, which she developed during her studies. In addition to her debut, she has published The Tide Singer (Child’s Play, 2021), which draws on Scottish folklore.
Beth Waters’ work has been recognised for its historical and cultural themes, as well as its distinctive visual approach. Her books are published by Child’s Play International. In 2020, Child of St Kilda was included in the UK Literacy Association Book Awards longlist.
