Barroux biography

Barroux studied photography, art, sculpture and architecture in France at the École Estienne and École Boule. He worked as an art director in Paris and Montreal, and began illustrating in Montreal by creating linocut images. He is known for children’s book illustration, and his illustration methods include acrylic paint, ballpoint-pen outlines and pencil shading.

Barroux wrote and illustrated Where’s the Elephant?, a 32-page picture book published by Candlewick on 8 March 2016 for ages 3 to 7. The book uses a hide-and-seek structure with an elephant, a parrot and a snake as a growing city encroaches on their jungle habitat, giving parents and children a route into discussion about urban development and animal habitats.

Line Of Fire: Diary Of An Unknown Soldier is a graphic novel by Barroux, translated by Sarah Ardizzone and published by Phoenix Yard Books in 2014 for readers aged 12 and above. Barroux found the diary of an unknown First World War soldier on a Paris rubbish heap, then transformed the rescued manuscript into a graphic novel about the first two months of the war in 1914.

Barroux collaborated with Bessora on Alpha: Abidjan to Gare du Nord, a graphic novel translated by Sarah Ardizzone and published by The Bucket List in 2016 for readers aged 14 and above. He created the graphic novel’s artwork using basic materials that could conceivably be found by a refugee.
