Barbara Perez Marquez is a queer writer who was born and raised in the Dominican Republic. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing. She writes short fiction and long-form fiction, and her work often uses coming-of-age and LGBTQIA+ themes. Her writing was first included in a student collection when she was in the 7th grade, an experience that helped shape her aim to become a writer.
Perez Marquez has worked in graphic novels for young readers and teenagers. She contributed writing to The Cardboard Kingdom, which was created, organised and drawn by Chad Sell, and she also contributed writing to The Cardboard Kingdom: Roar of the Beast. She adapted To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before: The Graphic Novel, with Jenny Han as the original author and Akimaro as illustrator.
Her later projects include The Curie Society, Volume 3, written with Heather Einhorn and Adam Staffaroni and illustrated by Sonia Liao; it was published by The MIT Press on 24 March 2026 for readers aged 13 to 17. She is also one of the creators of To Dance the Moon and Stars (A Graphic Novel), with Tasia M S; it is scheduled for publication by Joy Revolution on 14 July 2026 for readers aged 12 and up.
Perez Marquez wrote The Library of Memories (A Graphic Novel), illustrated by Lissy Marlin, for Little, Brown Ink. The 328-page middle-grade fantasy graphic novel is scheduled for publication on 25 August 2026.
