Arthur Conan Doyle was a British author and physician best known for creating the detective Sherlock Holmes. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1859 and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, qualifying as a doctor in 1881. Doyle initially worked as a physician, both in general practice and as a ship’s doctor, before dedicating himself to writing.
He achieved early literary success with the publication of A Study in Scarlet in 1887, introducing Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson. Doyle went on to write four novels and fifty-six short stories featuring Holmes, many of which were first published in The Strand Magazine. The character quickly became one of the most recognisable figures in popular fiction.
In addition to detective fiction, Doyle wrote historical novels, science fiction, plays, poetry, and non-fiction. Notable titles include The Lost World (1912), featuring the adventurer Professor Challenger, and the historical novel Micah Clarke (1889).
Doyle was knighted in 1902 for his work during the Second Boer War. He was also a prominent public figure, involved in political campaigns and spiritualist movements in later life. Arthur Conan Doyle died in 1930.
