Annemarie Anang is a British-Ghanaian author, musician, actress, and former primary school teacher. She trained in acting at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Anang began writing for children after searching for diverse picture books to share with her daughter.
Her debut picture book, I Am Nefertiti, was published by Five Quills in 2022. The story follows Nefertiti, a young girl and drummer, and explores themes of self-esteem, identity, and music. The book was shortlisted for the Little Rebels Award and the Leeds Book Awards in 2023.
Anang’s second picture book, Dance Just Like So!, was published in 2023. Her books often celebrate individuality, culture, and creativity, drawing on her experience as a musician and performer. Alongside her writing, Anang has worked as an actress, appearing in productions with companies such as Punchdrunk Enrichment and Lazarus Theatre Company, as well as in television.
She received the SCBWI BIPOC Writer’s Scholarship in 2021. Anang has appeared at literature festivals in the UK, including Bath and Cheltenham. Her work is recognised for promoting inclusion and representation in children’s literature.
