Children’s book news for July 2026: Beth O’Brien wins the Carnegie and UKLA awards, Patrice Lawrence becomes Children’s Laureate, John Agard takes a third CLiPPA, and Little Smith launches.
Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Anna C. Wilson, also published as Anna Wilson, is a British children’s author, editor, writing coach and nonfiction writer. She studied Modern Languages at Cambridge before becoming a children’s book editor for Macmillan Children’s Books and HarperCollins.
Her first published book was Over in the Grasslands, a picture book published by Macmillan in 1999. She later wrote the Nina, Fairy Ballerina series for readers aged 5 to 8, and was chosen as a World Book Day author in 2010.
Wilson’s books for children include fiction, nonfiction, picture books, poems, short stories and early readers. Her published titles include Monkey Business, The Poodle Problem, Summer’s Shadow, The Parent Problem, Vlad the World’s Worst Vampire, The Wide, Wide Sea, Shine Like the Stars, Grandpa and the Kingfisher and Be Back Soon.
Her nonfiction for children includes the National Trust Nature Month-by-Month almanacs, published by Nosy Crow between 2018 and 2022. National Trust: A Story of the Seasons, illustrated by Carolina Rabei, was published by Nosy Crow in 2024.
Grandpa and the Kingfisher, illustrated by Sarah Massini and published by Nosy Crow, was shortlisted for the Wainwright Nature Prize in 2023 and selected as a Read for Empathy title in 2024.
