Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Andrew Weale is a British author, poet and performer specialising in humorous picture books and early-childhood storytelling. He writes moving rhyme and narrative poetry tailored to pre-school and primary audiences.
His debut picture books include Newt in a Suit and Nora: The Girl Who Ate and Ate and Ate, both published around 2011. In the same period he released Spooky Spooky House, a pop-up picture book that won the Red House Children’s Book Award in 2013 and the Wakefield Picture Book Award in 2015.
Weale has written around five picture books to date, including A Quiet Day in the Jungle and Dinosaur Doo. He regularly visits schools and literary festivals such as Hay and the Sunday Times Oxford Literary Festival, delivering workshops, storytelling and performance sessions.
He also works as a freelance film-maker, actor, singer, lecturer and teacher, and lectures on picture-book writing on an MA course at Winchester University.
Spooky Spooky House won the Red House Children’s Book Award in 2013.
