Alexandre Dumas was a French novelist and playwright, renowned for his historical adventure stories. Born in 1802, Dumas began his literary career as a dramatist, achieving early success with plays such as Henri III et sa cour and La Tour de Nesle. He later turned to novel writing, becoming one of the most widely read French authors of the nineteenth century.
Dumas is best known for his novels The Three Musketeers (Les Trois Mousquetaires), first published in 1844, and The Count of Monte Cristo (Le Comte de Monte-Cristo), published in 1844–1846. These works, often serialized, combined adventure, historical settings, and vivid characterisation, and have since been translated into numerous languages and adapted for stage and screen.
He collaborated with writers including Auguste Maquet, who contributed to the planning and research of several major novels. Dumas also wrote sequels and companion works, such as Twenty Years After and The Vicomte de Bragelonne, extending the adventures of his famous characters.
In recognition of his contribution to literature, Dumas’s remains were moved to the Panthéon in Paris in 2002, a national honour reserved for some of France’s most distinguished figures.
