Alex Morss biography

Alex Morss is a children’s author, ecologist, science journalist and educator whose work focuses on wildlife, ecology and natural history. She has science degrees in ecology, biology, biological recording and environmental science, and has worked in ecological consultancy as well as journalism, publishing and science communication.

Morss has co-written a series of nature picture books with children’s author Sean Taylor, illustrated by Cinyee Chiu and published by Happy Yak. The Seasons in the Wild series comprises Winter Sleep: A Hibernation Story, Busy Spring: Nature Wakes Up, Wild Summer: Life in the Heat and Autumn Feast: Nature’s Harvest. The books combine stories about families exploring the natural world with factual material explaining seasonal changes, animal behaviour and plant life. Winter Sleep was longlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal.

Morss and Taylor also wrote Funny Bums, Freaky Beaks and Other Incredible Creature Features, illustrated by Sarah Edmonds and published by Welbeck. The non-fiction book examines unusual animal body parts and the adaptations that make them useful. Morss was also consultant editor on Penny Worms and Hannah Bailey’s The Most Important Animal of All, a children’s book about keystone species endorsed by the British Ecological Society.

The four Seasons in the Wild stories were collected in A Year in Nature: A Collection of Stories for Every Season, published by Happy Yak in February 2026.
