Alex Latimer biography

Alex Latimer is a South African writer and illustrator of children’s books. He has a degree in English and Philosophy. His picture-book work includes writing and illustration, and his debut picture book was The Boy Who Cried Ninja, a 32-page children’s book about Tim, a boy whose unlikely explanations include a ninja, a giant squid and a time-travelling monkey.

The Boy Who Cried Ninja was reviewed in 2011 as Latimer’s children’s book debut. A later Peachtree paperback edition was published on 4 February 2014 for readers aged 4–8. Lion vs. Rabbit, another picture book by Latimer, won the Hampshire Picture Book Award 2014.

Latimer’s books include The Boy Who Cried Ninja, Lion vs. Rabbit, Pig and Small, Am I Yours?, Don’t Think of Tigers and Tony Rex’s Seven Stomps to Success. He also illustrated The Baseball Player and the Walrus.

Pip and Egg, written by Latimer and illustrated by David Litchfield, was published in May 2021. Frank Is a Butterfly, by Latimer, was published by Oxford University Press in 2025 for children aged 4 to 7.
