Akemi Dawn Bowman is a notable author in the field of young adult literature. She is of Scottish and Japanese descent and grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada. Bowman is a graduate of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she earned a degree in social work.

Her debut novel, Starfish, was published in 2017 by Simon Pulse. The book received critical acclaim and was a finalist for the William C. Morris Award, which recognises debut books published by first-time authors writing for teens. Starfish also won the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature in the Young Adult category.
