WHAT YOU GET

A reading plan designed around your school

We start with your school’s context and connect realistic actions to the books, people and resources that will help deliver them.

01

A plan for your school

An achievable 30, 60 and 90-day roadmap, with clear priorities, suggested responsibilities and simple ways to review progress.

02

Reading for pleasure

Practical ways to build book talk, reading choice, read-alouds, independent reading and a whole-school reading culture.

03

Inclusive reading

Suggestions for less confident readers, SEND, EAL, reluctant teenagers and pupils who benefit from accessible formats.

04

Library and collection ideas

Ideas for using books you already own, auditing gaps, refreshing displays, gathering pupil feedback and widening access.

05

Professional reading and CPD

Relevant books and short discussion ideas for teachers, senior leaders, librarians, TAs and pastoral teams.

06

Make budgets go further

A no-spend starting point, optional purchasing priorities and links to useful existing free resources.

THE RIGHT BOOKS FOR THE RIGHT PURPOSE

At least 30 books, chosen with a purpose

Every recommendation has a purpose. We explain why the selected books are relevant, who will benefit and how they could be used. Suitable UK editions are checked when recommendations are prepared.

20+

For pupils

Fiction, nonfiction, poetry, graphic novels and accessible formats, matched to age groups, interests and reading priorities.

5+

For teachers and leaders

Professional reading on literacy, reading culture, inclusion, curriculum and staff development, selected for your goals.

5+

For support staff

Useful reading for teaching assistants, school librarians, pastoral teams, SENCO colleagues and other relevant roles.

We can start with the books your school already owns, free resources and local library services, then suggest optional additions if useful.

SIMPLE FROM START TO FINISH

Four steps. All by email.

Start with a short email about your school and priorities. We’ll reply with the next steps and prepare recommendations around the information you share.

2

We review your needs

We consider what you already do well and may ask brief questions if further context is helpful.

4

Try, review, adapt

Start small, gather useful feedback and request a follow-up email review, subject to availability.

A PRACTICAL APPROACH

What might your first 90 days look like?

Every school’s recommendations will be different. Here’s an illustration of how a reading-for-pleasure priority could turn into manageable actions without introducing extra testing or paperwork.

DAYS 1–30

Listen and identify

Gather pupil voice, understand reading barriers, look at the collection and select a few realistic priorities.

DAYS 31–60

Put ideas into practice

Trial targeted book recommendations, strengthen book talk and support staff with focused resources.

DAYS 61–90

Review and refine

Check participation and enjoyment, seek feedback, improve access and decide what to develop next.

Which schools can request support?

UK primary, secondary, special and alternative provision schools, including sixth forms. Headteachers, senior leaders, English and literacy leads, librarians, SENCOs and other school staff can contact us on behalf of their school.

GOOD TO KNOW

Frequently asked questions

Is this really free?

Yes. There is no charge for the email-based support described here, and no subscription or compulsory purchase. Our website may include clearly identified uk.bookshop.org affiliate book links, but using them is optional.

How can our school get started?

Simply email us with your school type, year groups and main reading priorities. We’ll review what you send and ask a few focused questions if that would help us tailor your plan.

Can you support SEND, reluctant readers or secondary pupils?

Yes. We can recommend inclusive reading approaches, age-respectful titles and accessible formats that staff can use alongside the school’s existing specialist support.

How quickly will you reply?

Requests are handled individually and response times depend on demand and complexity. We will explain the next steps when we respond. The service is offered subject to team availability.

How will the plan help our school improve reading?

We’ll identify practical priorities based on your school’s goals, recommend carefully selected books for pupils and staff, and suggest manageable actions for the next 30, 60 and 90 days. We’ll also include simple ways to review progress and build on what works.

What information should we share?

Please share your school’s general reading priorities, the age groups involved and the kinds of support you would find useful. School-level information is all we need. For details about how we use enquiries, see our privacy policy.
