Our review:

Priya Chkadhari is cursed by the Blood Moon and must hide her ability to manipulate other people’s souls or risk being put to death by the villagers. Rejected by her own mother’s affections and disliked by her sycophantic sister, Ishani, Priya embarks on a journey to a better life when she is selected to be taken to the much desired but mysterious Kuwatta. Once there she begins to realise her curse is actually a gift and discovers and appreciates her self-worth as she fights to save her race and culture.

She befriends an eclectic mix of other characters whose skills and relationship with Priya, including the General’s dashing son, Reza, are steadily unveiled. For the first time, she feels a sense of belonging, a common purpose to defeat the dangerous, bloodthirsty rabidos and their mother, the horrific Dedekedre.

Within the Heart of Wicked Creatures is a beautifully written, heartfelt novel that provides hope and optimism in the benefits of unity and humankind. A complex array of cultures intertwines with fantastical creatures as the characters learn to understand and appreciate the rewards and satisfaction of unity and humility in terminating their oppressors. The novel astutely explores the sensitive but relevant issues of racism, slavery, violence, war, bodily harm, and love. Differences in cultural expectations reflect contemporary and historical societal issues, likely experienced by most young adults and as such, present a reassuring read.

Rima Orie leaves the reader with unanswered questions and the opportunity to create their own ending; alternatively, there might be a potential sequel.

Our verdict:

Within the Heart of Wicked Creatures is a must-read for those who enjoy fantasy, and young adult themes. A steady read which slowly unravels, it will suit teen readers who are seeking a gradual but inspiring read.
