Our review:

Elle Kennedy’s debut young adult thriller introduces us to Ryan Shipley, a girl carrying the heaviest burden imaginable: the identity of a serial killer’s daughter. Returning to Starling, Tennessee, after ten years away, Ryan simply wants to blend in, keep her head down, and survive her senior year incognito. But small towns have long memories, and as her father’s execution looms on the horizon, the past begins clawing its way back to the surface in ways Ryan never could have anticipated.

What begins as a story of quiet survival slowly transforms into something far more urgent and dangerous. Cryptic messages, uncomfortable coincidences, and a town full of people with their own hidden agendas begin to congregate around Ryan, forcing her out of the shadows and into the heart of a mystery she isn’t sure she wants to solve. Each chapter peels back another layer, revealing that the truth about her father’s crimes, and her own family, may be far more complex and sinister than anyone realised, including herself.

Intertwined within the unravelling of the truth, Ryan finds herself drawn into the orbits of two very different boys, each offering something she has long been denied: understanding, warmth, and the dangerous possibility of being truly known. Alongside this, her growing bond with her cousins and the family she is only just getting to know raises the stakes. For perhaps the first time, Ryan begins to understand what it means to belong somewhere, even as the ground beneath her threatens to give way.

As relationships intensify and the truth begins to emerge, Thornbird becomes a race against time, against secrets, and against the very identity Ryan has been trying to escape.

Our verdict:

Thornbird is a gripping and emotional debut novel that proves Elle Kennedy is just as capable of keeping readers on the edge of their seats in the young adult thriller genre as she is in romance. With a brilliantly layered mystery, a protagonist you genuinely root for, and a small community atmosphere dripping with unease, this is a compelling read with a seriously unpredictable plot. It is dark, twisty, and, at times, deeply moving, cleverly combining the sinister with romance and relationships.

For readers aged 14 and up, particularly fans of Holly Jackson and Karen McManus, Thornbird is an easy recommendation. The suspense is relentless, the emotional pull is real, and the surprises come thick and fast, making it difficult to put down.

Many thanks to Electric Monkey for the review copy.
