William Kamkwamba is a Malawian author and innovator known for his work in renewable energy and for co-authoring the memoir The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. Born in Malawi, Kamkwamba gained recognition for building a wind turbine from scrap materials to provide electricity for his family’s home and village. His story attracted international attention and led to the publication of his memoir, which he wrote with Bryan Mealer.
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind was published in 2009 by HarperCollins. The book has been released in both adult and young readers’ editions. Kamkwamba’s memoir details his early life in Malawi, his interest in science and engineering, and the challenges he faced during a period of famine and hardship. The book has been used in educational settings to inspire young people in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
In addition to his writing, Kamkwamba has spoken at various international conferences and events, sharing his experiences and advocating for education and innovation in Africa.
