Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Valerie Thomas is an Australian author best known for her work in children’s literature. She is the creator of the popular Winnie the Witch series, which features the adventures of a witch named Winnie and her black cat, Wilbur. The series is illustrated by Korky Paul and has been published by Oxford University Press.
Thomas began her career as a teacher before turning to writing. The first book in the Winnie the Witch series was published in 1987. The books are known for their humour and imaginative storylines, as well as their distinctive illustrations. Over the years, the series has expanded to include numerous titles, activity books, and picture books.
In addition to the Winnie the Witch series, Thomas has written other children’s books, but she is most widely recognised for her collaboration with Korky Paul. The Winnie the Witch books have received several awards, including the Children’s Book Award in 1988 for the original title, Winnie the Witch.
Valerie Thomas’s work continues to be published by Oxford University Press, with new titles in the Winnie the Witch series released in subsequent years.
