Anthony Peter “Tony” Buzan (2 June 1942 – 13 April 2019) was an English author and educational consultant. He popularised the concepts of mind mapping, mental literacy, speed reading and mnemonic systems.
Buzan was born in Palmers Green, Middlesex. He studied psychology, English, mathematics and science at the University of British Columbia. He also attended Simon Fraser University for graduate work, during which he became editor of the International Journal of Mensa.
In the 1970s, Buzan presented the BBC television series Use Your Head. Many of the ideas from that and his other work appeared in books including Use Your Head, The Speed Reading Book, The Mind Map Book, Use Your Memory and Master Your Memory.
He launched a software programme called iMindMap in December 2006 to support the application of mind mapping digitally.
Buzan was founder or president of organisations including the Brain Foundation and the Brain Trust Charity, and initiated events such as the World Memory Championships and the Mind Sports Olympiad.
Tony Buzan died on 13 April 2019 at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, from a heart attack.
One of his works for younger audiences is Mind Maps for Kids: Max Your Memory and Concentration.
