Tomi Adeyemi is a Nigerian-American author known for her work in young adult fantasy fiction. She studied English Literature at Harvard University and later received a fellowship to study West African mythology and culture in Salvador, Brazil. Adeyemi’s writing draws on her heritage and research, incorporating elements of West African mythology into her stories.
Her debut novel, Children of Blood and Bone, was published by Macmillan Children’s Books in 2018. The book is the first in the Legacy of Orïsha trilogy and follows the journey of a young heroine in a world inspired by West African culture and mythology. The novel received critical attention and was recognised for its imaginative world-building and exploration of themes such as oppression and resilience.
Adeyemi continued the series with Children of Virtue and Vengeance, published in 2019. The trilogy is published in the UK by Macmillan Children’s Books. Her work has been acknowledged by several literary organisations, and Children of Blood and Bone was awarded the 2019 Waterstones Children’s Book Prize for Older Fiction.
