Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Susannah Lloyd is a British children’s author whose picture books and illustrated fiction are published in the UK and internationally. Her work is characterised by playful narration, visual misdirection and stories that invite young readers to spot clues in the artwork. Her books have been translated into multiple languages and are used widely for read-aloud sessions in schools and libraries.
Lloyd’s debut with a major trade house was The Terribly Friendly Fox, illustrated by Ellie Snowdon and issued by Simon & Schuster Children’s UK on 19 September 2019. She followed with This Book Can Read Your Mind, illustrated by Jacob Grant (Frances Lincoln/Quarto; UK 2020, US 2021), an interactive picture book built around comic “mind-reading” mishaps. A medieval quest sequence with illustrator Paddy Donnelly began with Here Be Dragons (Frances Lincoln, February 2021) and continued in Here Be Giants (Frances Lincoln, April 2024).
Further titles include Oh Monty!, illustrated by Nici Gregory (Pavilion, September 2021), which was longlisted for the 2022 Klaus Flugge Prize for Illustration; Who Ate Steve?, illustrated by Kate Hindley (Nosy Crow, June 2024), issued with an accompanying audio narration by Richard Ayoade; and her first chapter book, Badgers Are Go!, illustrated by Nici Gregory (David Fickling Books, September 2024).
Publisher and author materials note that Lloyd draws inspiration from classic cinema, museum collections and close observation of small details in the everyday world. She visits schools to lead sessions on storytelling and enjoys developing books that reward careful looking as well as listening.
